IN A NUTSHELL:
Basingstoke won their first league game of the season against a sadly out of touch Kettering today. The young full time professionals showed their visitors how to play and, in fairness, could have won by a greater margin given a dominant first 45 minutes. The goals came from George Hallahan in the 19th and 34th minutes (penalty) and after 2 minutes of the second half through Sam Deadfield
THE KETTERING SQUAD:
Already without the injured Bateman,Carruthers, Baker and Canavan and suspended Carvalho, missing also was Howe serving the first game of his 3 game ban. Sam Smith started and onto the bench came Steve Kinniburgh and Craig Hill.
HOW THE GAME UNFOLDED:
It was a howling gale which favoured the home team in the first half on a lovely playing surface.
Kettering forced the first, but unproductive, corner and for the Dragons- George Bennett fired wide early on.
Home keeper, Alex Tokarczyk took a Sam Smith cross and both teams had to make early substitutions. Ashleigh Artwell and Callum Westwood sustained leg injuries and were replaced by Dan Collier and Ben Stephens respectively.
Basingstoke were playing some lovely football to feet and with a lack of marking and tracking, were cutting through the Kettering team like a knife through butter.
It was no surprise that they took the lead on 19 minutes. There was plenty of room for right back Marcus Johnson-Schuster to run clear down the right, and provide a low cross for George Hallahan to fire home unchallenged- giving Paul Walker no chance.
The Poppies tried to respond and Smith’s pass found Spencer Weir-Daley whose shot was blocked and scrambled away. It was a good chance. Almost immediately James Brighton was set up with a clear shot on goal. Uncharacteristically he completely missed his kick and fell over!
However, in the next minute Walker had to tip over a George Bennett shot and David Ray headed wide from the corner.
Weir-Daley had another chance but fired across goal after a good pass from Anthony Howell.
Basingstoke came again and Johnson-Schuster’s shot beat Walker but also the left upright- just.
The home team were in total control as Hallahan’s low cross beat the defence and Aaron Jarvis could just not apply the finishing touch. Then Hallahan created space and the shot was just past the post.
Walker then pulled off a great save, diving to his left, from Bennett’s well struck effort. In the next minute, the 34th, Bennett got just inside the box and was tripped by a poor challenge by Ben Stephens. Hallahan scored from the penalty spot albeit that Walker got a big hand on the shot.
Again Kettering had a chance to score, as Dom Langdon crossed low, but both Smith and Weir- Daley could not get a decent contact with only the keeper to beat.
Jarvis fired wide for Basingstoke and then Kettering had a great chance to score. Weir-Daley set up Nathan Hicks 8 yards out. The midfielder completely mishit the shot and even then as the ball drifted across goal, Smith failed to make contact six yards out.
The hosts had a chance right on the interval to make it three, but substitute Dan Collier’s shot was just wide of the left post.
Half Time: Basingstoke Town 2 - 0 Kettering Town
Any thoughts of a Kettering revival were dispelled within the first 90 seconds of the half. First Jarvis got clear on the right and his cross cum shot cannoned off the left post and was cleared. There was no respite however as it was 3-0 after 47 minutes.
In plenty of space Sam Deadfield received a pass from the right and his low drilled shot took a deflection past the helpless Walker.
Anthony Howell’s 51st minute free kick found Smith’s head- but the effort lacked power as Tokarczyk collected.
A minute later Hallahan forced Walker to make a good save to his left.
Weir-Daley’s 53rd minute cross was missed by two Kettering players as the Poppies struggled to make an impression. Kettering brought on Nathan Bobowicz and Jordan Wilson for Howell and Hicks and went with three at the back- pushing up Gary Mulligan into midfield.
On the hour Tokarczyk did mishandle but Matt Partridge was on hand to clear as the ball headed for the goal line.
Smith’s 62nd minute cross was poor and straight at the keeper and a couple of minutes later James Haran’s shot went out of the ground. Jordan Wilson’s first shot was deflected wide for a corner and soon, at the other end, substitute Aaron Redford forced Walker to save the shot.
On 69 minutes Wilson’s turn and shot saw the side netting ripple as the Poppies continued to fire blanks. Next Bobowicz put his left foot shot wide and then two inviting James Brighton crosses went begging.
As the game entered the last 10 minutes, the Poppies were camped in the Basingstoke half but scoring a goal looked remote. Langdon won a header from a corner but headed over; Mulligan shot wide;Wilson’s good shot was tipped over by the keeper;Wilson’s 90th minute shot was deflected direct to Tokarczyk; Haran fired out of the ground again and Brighton’s right foot shot almost caught out the keeper but Tokarczyk recovered to save at the second attempt.
Ironically, substitute Ramone Rose had the best chance in this period for the hosts- but, clear on goal, he fired wide.
A very bad day at the office and the management and players at Kettering Town FC now appear to have everything to prove.
